As part of the celebration to mark the 400th anniversary of
the discovery of America president Benjamin Harrison in 1892 called for
patriotic exercises in schools. The Pledge of Allegiance was taken from a
children's magazine. It was first recited by public school children as they saluted
the flag during the national school Celebration held that year.
In 1942 Congress made the pledge part of its code for the use of the flag.
Francis Bellamy is attributed with authorship and in 1954 the words "under
God" were added by Congress.

For most Americans the flag is a cause for national pride
and admiration. The "Stars and Stripes," as the flag is commonly
called, helps to unify the country and to unite many different people from many
different cultures into one united country. It is a source of national
identity.
The design of the American flag has gone through several changes but the one
which is used today is highly symbolic and cannot be confused with that of any
other nation. The red and white stripes on the flag represent the original
thirteen colonies and each white star set in a field of blue stands for a
state. The first flag of the U.S. was raised in Cambridge, Mass. By George
Washington on January 2, 1776.

Today the life of the cowboy is quite different from those
early days after the Civil War. Helicopters rather than horses are now used to
round up the cattle and modern technology used in the ranches has made the
cowboy's life less formidable. Yet, the legends which surround him continue to
perpetuate his image as the masterful hero of the Wild West.
23) What are used now to round up the
cows?

A great boon to the life of the cowboy was the building of
the railroads which connected eastern cities to those out West. In 1866 when
the Kansas and Pacific railroad reached the small dusty village of Abilene in
Kansas, the life of the cowboy was connected to the rest of the country.
Hundreds of small cow towns grew up along the old trails which led the cattle
to market, and thus the west became integrated into the economic life of the
country.

The life of a cowboy was an outdoor one endured under harsh
conditions. His wide-brimmed hat protected him from the glaring summer sun and
his heavy leather jacket and gloves were his defense against the cold winters.
His workday was long beginning before sunrise and lasting well into the night.
His best friend was his horse and he spent most of his waking hours in the
saddle. His speech was a mixture of Spanish and English and at night by a
campfire he wove his speech into songs about life on the prairie.

These men were handy with tools and knew how to handle a
horse. Some of them discovered the use of rope to catch cattle and developed
the lariat.
Their life was not an easy one. In winter they watched over the herds and in
the springtime they selected cattle for market often driving herds of them
hundreds of miles to the nearest town. The cattle were then sold to buyers and
the routine would start all over again.
20) What did these men do

An image of American folklore which has inspired songs,
stories, folk tales and legends has been the cowboy. These romantic figures of
the wild frontier probably can trace their origin back to the time of the
Spanish conquistadors. The Spanish brought with them to the New World many
young men who were experienced with cattle and horses. They were to evolve into
the modern-day cowboy.

The era of the cowboy really began after the Civil War
(1861-1865). During this
decisive war the Texas cattle had roamed undisturbed in the wild, breeding
freely on the plains and greatly increasing in number. By the end of the war,
however, Texas was filled with wild cattle. The people in the mushrooming
cities of the East and in the Middle West wanted more meat for their diet and
local farmers could not keep up with their demands. Therefore, the need for the
cowboy emerged from the demands of the people and the nature of the culture.

And what about the marriage itself? In a world with such a high divorce
rate, how do Richard and Victoria hope to avoid all the problems that beset so
many other couples? Richard explains thoughtfully that "our ambition is to
always talk to each other. If you stop communicating, what chance do you
have?" His wife goes along with that completely. "I hope that we can
speak about things, but also not expect everything to be easy. I think many
people expect the wedding to be the end of getting to know each other. I think
it's the start."

The young couple has just returned from a two-week honeymoon spent in an
authentic Scottish castle. Both the newly-weds are big travel lovers and
Richard hopes this will continue. "I would like to go travelling as much
as possible together. Travelling with someone else is such a sharing
experience. I think it's sad to experience all the wonderful places in the
world and have no-one else there." Victoria also has another great travel
ambition that she might have to do alone. "I have always been fascinated
by safari and my real wish is to go on safari. Richard has no interest in
wildlife though."

"At the moment, we are still living with my parents," explains
Victoria, "so our first wish is to find our own place. We intend to start
looking for a new house with all the modern conveniences in the suburbs in the
new year." Both Victoria and husband Richard have a lot of siblings. Do
they intend to add to the extended Hammond family? "We plan on having two
or three children ourselves," Richard tells me. "Victoria is just
wonderful with children and I can get 3 years paternity leave from my work,
which is just perfect."

Considering their wedding cost over $20,000 and took a year and a half
to organize, you would be surprised to hear that Richard and Victoria Hammond
now intend to forget it. Well, almost. "It
was a wonderful wedding, an unbelievable day," says Victoria. "But we
have so much we want to do together now, we are both looking to the
future." Her husband, banker and amateur race driver Richard, agrees.
"Both our minds are now fixed firmly on the future. I'll never forget our
wedding ceremony or the reception we had at a cliff-side hotel afterwards, but
there's so much we want, so many hopes. Our marriage is so much more important
than the wedding."

According to immigration records, he arrived in the United
States with the Karno troupe on October 2, 1912. In the Karno Company was
Arthur Stanley Jefferson, who would later become known as Stan Laurel. Chaplin
and Laurel shared a room in a boarding house. Stan Laurel returned to England
but Chaplin remained in the United States. Chaplin's act was seen by film producer
Mack Sennett, who hired him for his studio, the Keystone Film Company.

Charlie first took to the stage when, aged five, he
performed in Music Hall in 1894, standing in for his mother. As a child, he was
confined to a bed for weeks due to a serious illness, and, at night, his mother
would sit at the window and act out what was going on outside. In 1900, aged
11, his brother helped get him the role of a comic cat in the pantomime
Cinderella at the London Hippodrome. In 1903 he appeared in 'Jim, A Romance of
Cockayne', followed by his first regular job, as the newspaper boy Billy in
Sherlock Holmes, a part he played into 1906. This was followed by Casey's
'Court Circus' variety show, and, the following year, he became a clown in Fred
Karno's 'Fun Factory' slapstick comedy company.

In 1896, Chaplin's mother was unable to find work; Charlie
and his older half-brother Sydney Chaplin had to be left in the workhouse at
Lambeth, moving after several weeks to Hanwell School for Orphans and Destitute
Children. His father died an alcoholic when Charlie was 12, and his mother
suffered a mental breakdown, and was eventually admitted temporarily to the
Cane Hill Asylum at Coulsdon (near Croydon). She died in 1928 in the United
States, two years after coming to the States to live with Chaplin, by then a
commercial success.

He was believed to have been born on April 16, 1889. There
is some doubt whether April 16 is actually his birthday, and it is possible he
was not born in 1889. There is also uncertainty about his birthplace: London or
Fontainebleau, France. There is no doubt, however, as to his parentage: he was
born to Charles Chaplin, Sr. and Hannah Harriett Hill (aka Lily Harley on
stage), both Music Hall entertainers. His parents separated soon after his
birth, leaving him in the care of his increasingly unstable mother.

Tim starts work at seven o'clock and drives trains on the London
Underground. He usually works in the mornings from Monday to Friday, but he
sometimes works on the weekends too. At noon he stops work for half an hour to
have his lunch. He eats cheese and tomato sandwiches which Betty makes for him,
and drinks a bottle of milk. After lunch he works until four o'clock and then
he goes home. In the evening he plays with his baby son, Ben, and watches TV
with Betty. At ten thirty they all go to bed because they are very tired - and
because they get up so early in the morning!

Every day Tim wakes up at five thirty when his alarm clock
rings. He gets up and then goes to the bathroom and has a long, hot shower.
After that he makes breakfast for him and his wife, Betty. Tim has coffee and
two slices of toast and Betty drinks a cup of tea and eats a bowl of
cornflakes. At six o'clock Tim brushes his teeth, always before he gets dressed
because it is very important that he doesn't get toothpaste on his clothes -
Tim is a train driver and he wears a uniform! Finally, he kisses his wife and
baby son and leaves his house in Watford at a quarter after six.

In this sense America can surely be seen as a melting pot
where people from all over the world come to live and work together forming one
nation. In such a culture there are dozens of shared symbols which serve to
develop all of the various ethnic groups to create a larger unified culture.
The flag, the national anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance all serve to break down
the walls which isolate ethnic groups.
The melting pot evokes another image; that of the colonial quilt which is made
out of fragments of different material but fashioned into one blanket. Whether
a salad bowl or a melting pot, America can best be described as a mixture of
both; that is to say, a nation where there is unity in diversity.
7) How many shared symbols are there in
America?

-
The other concept which is also used to describe American
society is that of the melting pot. In this usage, society is like a pot of
stew or a cauldron of porridge. All of the ingredients mix and blend together
losing their identity and yield a bit of what they were to become a new
reality. A pot of stew is very different from a bowl of salad. Within the stew,
the meat and vegetables in the cooking process give to each other a bit of
their own flavor. The longer the stew is allowed to simmer, the better the
taste and the more likely it will be for the mixture to dissolve.
6) What is society like?
? (เข้าชม 459 ครั้ง)
-
From this point of view, America is very much like a salad
bowl where individual ethnic groups blend together, yet maintain their cultural
uniqueness. They may work together during the day at similar jobs and in
identical companies, but at night they may return to their ethnic communities
where the flavor of their individual culture dominates their way of life. This
is why perhaps there is so much diversity within America. Each ethnic group has its own special
interests, language, food, customs and traditions to protect and defend. This
idea of the salad bowl is referred to by sociologists as cultural pluralism. It
simply means that American society is a collection of many cultures living side
by side within one country.

After the Civil war the new arrivals were mainly from east
and south Europe. Since World War II there has been an influx of Spanish
speaking people especially Mexicans. In recent years there have been large
numbers from Africa, Asia and Latin America.
In a bowl of freshly tossed salad, all the ingredients are mixed together. Yet
they never lose their shape, form or identity. Together, however, the
ingredients make up a unity. In a sense, all the ingredients of a salad
contribute to the finished product. They may be covered with the same dressing,
but the green vegetables, tomatoes, lettuce and eggs can all be seen for what
they are.
4) After the Civil war, where were the
new arrivals mainly from?
? (เข้าชม 476 ครั้ง)
-
Some people describe American society as a salad bowl while
others see it as a melting pot. In a sense both are correct depending upon
one's point of view. This ethnic multiplicity is a result of the history of
immigration. Until the Immigration Law of 1924 the country was a "melting
pot" of nations. The original settlers of the Atlantic colonies were
chiefly from the British Isles. In addition numerous black African slaves were
imported to work the plantations in the South. By the mid-19th century, as
settlement of the West was accelerating, Irish and German immigrants came in
great numbers soon to be followed by Scandinavians

Police statistics also show that death by firearms is one of
the leading causes of death among children under twenty and many citizens feel
that owning one is a necessary for self-protection. In a campaign to get
children to give up their weapons, guns were once exchanged for toys at
Christmas. Several years ago thousands of children handed in their firearms for
coupons redeemable at Toys "R" Us. This was a bizarre and ironic
indication of the full extend of the problem.
Although most people would never want to own a gun, others have taken up
hunting as a sport and enjoy hunting wild game in season. Hunting for deer,
pheasants and duck in fall and winter is very much a part of the American
culture.

When foreigners are
sometimes asked what seems most strange about American society, somewhere on
the top of the list will be the fact that the average citizen is allowed to
possess guns.
Although it is true that many people carry guns legally in the United States,
it is also known that many who possess guns carry them illegally. Others, who
don't have guns, feel that guns can be acquired quite easily. A recent survey
indicated that many high school students, especially in the inner cities, can
acquire a gun with little difficulty. Some schools require students to pass
through a metal detector similar to those found at airports before entering the
school building
